Cemetery of fishing boats in Mazirbe
A boat, like a person, is born and dies. During the Soviet era, it was forbidden to go out to sea in some coastal villages in Northern Kurzeme, but in Mazirbe, fishing was allowed under the supervision of strict border guards. In the coastal forest of Mazirbe, boats arrived when the fleet changed - the old boats had served their time, and new ones replaced them, leaving the old ones in the forest. The old boats found a different use (such as sheds, etc.). The last wooden boats were added here as late as 1976.
Now, the forest is gradually «consuming» them.
